Toys that wait for a child to begin.

Most toys today perform for children: they light up, talk and play on their own. We make the opposite. Here's where that idea came from, and what goes into every Perch Play set.

The product story

How Perch Play began

Perch Play started as an entry for a toy design competition at IIT Madras. What began as a personal exploration grew, through many rounds of sketches and prototypes, into a magnetic wooden stacking toy for children aged 1 to 7.

Along the way it was shaped with guidance from Aruna Shekar, a psychologist and children's book writer, and Murli Krishna, a toy and game designer. Every bird, from Rosiee to Pip, was first drawn by hand by designer Nandana Preenand before being cut and painted in wood.

What we do

Open-ended toys, made by hand

Team Urban Play designs toys that ask something of a child instead of simply entertaining them. There are no screens, no batteries and no single right way to play, only pieces that can become whatever a child imagines next.

Each toy is designed to last for years of play, and to be passed on.

A toy should ask something of a child, not just entertain them.

Why we work in wood

Children understand the world through their hands first. Natural ivory wood is warm to hold, has a gentle weight, and feels different from every plastic toy in the house.

We keep the grain smooth, round every edge, and finish each piece with matte milk paint, so there's nothing slippery, sharp or loud: just an honest material that invites a child to slow down and explore.
